Photogravure is an old technique where a photographic plate is made, a craft that has been revitalised with the advance of digital technology. Photogravures, or photopolymers as they are also known, are created exposing light-sensitive polymer-coated metal sheets, plates, and printed transparencies in UV light. The ultraviolet light damages the polymer and an etching plate is created ready to be inked and put through a printing press.
This is a handmade print from a photopolymer plate printed with Charbonnel Carbon Black ink. Each print has an etching plate inked up and wiped clean of excess inked and hand-pulled through an etching press.
Handprint on Sommerset paper, each print is individual.
